Sonar - Sound Navigation and Ranging

Sonar, short for Sound Navigation and Ranging, is is tool for surveying and mapping seas and oceans. the reason is, that sound waves travel much farther in water than radar or light waves.

NOAA scientists use sonar to draw nautical charts, to locate underwater obstacels, sto locate objects like shipwrecks, and to map the ocean or sea floor.
